Hologic Digital Mammography vs. Power Wheelchair: A Buyer's Comparison

When I took over purchasing in 2020, I thought a medical device was a medical device. If the specs checked out and the price matched the budget, my job was done. Five years later, I know better. I'm not a service engineer or radiologist, so I can't tell you how to read a mammogram.   • Point products are defined by their specifications: a power wheelchair with the right seat dimensions and controls, a biosafety cabinet with the right exhaust type and certification, a surgical stapler with the right cartridge size.
  • Platform systems sit inside a wider workflow. A Hologic digital mammography system changes how technologists screen, how images are processed and stored, what QC tasks need to happen, and how the service plan is built.

When a purchase is a point product, the spec sheet has the answers. When it is a platform system, the spec sheet is just the beginning.

Dimension 1: Spec complexity

For power wheelchairs, specs are bounded. Seat width, drive wheels, battery type, weight capacity. For biosafety cabinets, the lab team usually specifies NSF/ANSI 49, Type A2 or B2, HEPA filter, and width. And if someone asks what is a surgical stapler, the answer leads directly to more specs: disposable vs reusable, open vs laparoscopic, cartridge type, staple size. In each case, the buyer can confirm that the device matches the request, then move on.

That manual is tied to the system and software version. It tells the team what checks are required and what results are acceptable. If the manual and system are out of sync, your biomedical engineer or medical physicist will find out during acceptance testing. That's not the time for surprises.

Dimension 2: Documentation and QC burden

Every order comes with documents. For a power wheelchair, I want the owner's manual, warranty, and a service source. For a biosafety cabinet, I need certification paperwork and a filter replacement history. For surgical staplers, I verify expiration dates, lot numbers, and supply chain traceability. Those records are important. They are also simpler than what a diagnostic imaging platform requires.

Mammography facilities in the United States operate under the FDA's MQSA requirements. As part of that, the facility has to maintain a quality control program. The Hologic QC manual is a cornerstone of that program for a Hologic digital mammography system. I'm not saying you need to read every procedure, but you need to confirm the right version is in the package before you sign off. When I compared two vendor quotes side by side, one included the Hologic QC manual, a physics acceptance plan, and service training. Hologic digital mammography includes service agreements, software upgrades, QC supplies, detector maintenance, physics tests, and training. A low acquisition price can disappear if the vendor doesn't support the five year cost.

One spreadsheet told me a used Hologic system would save our network $160,000. The same system had no current QC manual, no software warranty, and no service agreement. My gut said the savings would be swallowed by the first service call. I went back to the finance team and recommended a new system with a complete support package. The numbers still worked; the risk did not.

So what should you decide?

If you're buying a power wheelchair, choose the vendor that delivers the configuration your patient needs and responds when the chair breaks down. If you're buying a biosafety cabinet, choose the cabinet that meets the lab's containment needs and current certification requirements. If you're asking what is a surgical stapler, review the procedure type and surgeon preferences. Those purchases require careful sourcing, but they are not system decisions.

If you're looking at Hologic digital mammography, change your lens. It's a platform purchase. That means you need to put the Hologic QC manual on the table, review it with the medical physicist, confirm software version and service coverage, model the first five years of costs, and ask what your team needs to run it. Then compare that entire package with other system options. This is not about claiming Hologic is always better. It's about using the right level of rigor for the purchase.

To be fair, this approach takes more time. It has to. Informed buyers make better decisions, and in medical equipment, that means fewer surprises for patients and staff.

If it's a point product, compare price, specs, and delivery. If it's a platform product like Hologic digital mammography, compare the system, the QC manual, the service plan, and the total cost. The first comparison saves money. The second one keeps the machine working.
